Electronic System Consideration — Stepper & Servo Motors
Most modern automation machines, especially CNC, use stepper or servo systems. The most popular stepper motors are the 2-phase bipolar motor & 4-phase Unipolar motor. Servo motors may be DC or AC; brushed or brushless servo motors both require an encoder to control the motor shaft and provide feedback on the shaft position.
Mechanical Consideration — Weight & Force
Estimate the gantry or table weight for router, mill, plasma, laser, or lathe. Weight is not the only factor — also consider the force, which may be weight + resistance + gravity. In CNC machines, consider the cutting material & thickness to determine the force required by the XYZ axis.
Mechanical Consideration — Speed
Travel speed is when the machine moves from point to another without any resistance. Cutting speed is when the machine is engaged with the material. Cutting speed varies by material hardness and thickness.
CNC Operation Software / Motion Controller
CNC Operation Software controls the motion of a CNC machine — from 1 up to 6+ axis machines. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. Any machine with mechanical movement can become a CNC machine, and advanced CNC controllers can control 2 or more axes simultaneously.
MotionTek primarily uses Mach3 Controller, however our CNC products are standard and can be used with any step/dir controller available in the market. Mach3 is an open software which allows users to write their own VB Script code to control the CNC machine as needed.
